Second Child From Submerged Vehicle in Cape Coral Canal Dies

According to Cape Coral police, a second child in a car that drove into a canal late Wednesday night has died.

Police had responded to an accident just before midnight that involved a vehicle driving into a canal with two adults and two children inside the vehicle.

Police found a 2014 Ford Focus submerged in the canal and two children trapped in the car.

The two adults involved in the crash, Julia Ann Drudy and Kenneth Wayne Lawson, both of Cape Coral, suffered only minor injuries. Police did not identify who was driving.

The car was headed east when the driver left the roadway and struck the elevated canal bank, which caused the vehicle to go airborne and into the canal.

Two children were trapped in the car.

One child died at a local hospital and the second child was taken to Golisano Children’s Hospital in Fort Myers where he later succumbed to his injuries from the crash, according to the release. Their identities were not released.

The crash is still under investigation.
